Adventures beyond the stars…
Beyond the Stars launched a few weeks ago at Tauranga Intermediate School library. A Tauranga Writers initiative to encourage young writers, the project invites intermediate school students to enter a competition to write a short, in this case, speculative fiction story. The winners and a selection of editor-picked stories then get published into an anthology, giving these new writers a taste of being published.
The Beyond this… project has been running for a while, but this year Chad Dick and I volunteered to be the editors. This was a long and involved process. Chad, with a head for excel spreadsheets and unafraid of details, was amazing. He’d been through the experience with a previous anthology for high school students and was an editing force to be reckoned with!
With over 350 entries, reading the stories with a small team, giving feedback on each one, deciding winners and those going into the anthology, communication with every writer to make sure we had details correct and they’d accepted our edits, finalising and proofing the final copy and getting it printed. It was a mammoth task.
So a few weeks ago when we had our launch it was amazing to see the happy faces of winners and anthologists who had been able to make the trip to Tauranga. It was great to put faces to the names of the writers who’d created these amazing worlds, plots, characters and filled our minds with adventures beyond the stars.
