Book week author visit to Churchill Park School

This morning I was welcomed to Auckland’s Churchill Park school. Located near St Heliers, in the middle of beautiful green farmland, it’s both a primary and intermediate school, with students from Year 0 to Year 8.

Speaking from a room inside their new library, I met many enthusiastic students. Some had even started to write their own comic books, songs or stories. I loved hearing about all the keen readers and writers in the group.

Within four fun 45 minute sessions, I talked about how I became a writer, how I visualise my writing ideas, tips for writers, answered lots of questions and smashed out a fun world building writing exercise for each group. I handed out copies of my hand drawn map of the world in Brave’s Journey, we looked at floor plans for the castle in my story and various other pictures and notes I’d created to help me write.

A packed library space for my author visit for book week

I want to thank all the students and teachers of Churchill Park school for inviting me, for listening so well, for asking brave questions and getting involved in the world building exercise.

I hope you’re inspired and ready to write your own creative stories.

Just about to begin speaking to the students at book week…
