Escape Festival – Mohamed Hassan
Mohamed Hassan wrote the book ‘How to be a bad Muslim’, a selection of essays about being a Muslim New Zealander that blends storytelling, memoir and non-fiction in a writing style I truly loved to read. I recently had the chance to hear him speak – and even perform one of his poems – at a fascinating session at Tauranga’s Escape festival, a literary event within the Tauranga Arts festival.

Taking two young people with me just made the experience even better as they really loved what he had to say and particularly enjoyed a sample of his slam poetry.

Great to be inspired by other excellent writers, even when the genre is completely different to my own. Plus, with an upcoming TV series in the mix, it looks like New Zealanders will be hearing even more from Hassan. Looking forward to it.
