Workshop with Silkpunk author Ken Liu

Last weekend I was one of twenty-something people to hang with multi-award winning epic fantasy author and creator of the term Silkpunk, Ken Liu. For over two hours! For free!

Ken Liu wrote the first piece of fiction to win three genre literary awards: the Hugo, the Nebula and the World Fantasy Award. He wrote the epic fantasy series The Dandelion Dynasty and he’s a great speaker. You can find out more at

Honestly this was the most interesting two hour Zoom workshop I’ve been to for an age. Ken talked about everything from Herodotus to the history of the second to the origins of the word ‘story’ and all kinds of treasure in between. The name of the workshop was How to think about technology in world building. It was so much more than that. Ken gave gracious feedback and offered interesting suggestions to story ideas, navigated the tangents expertly and gave some sound advice. Outside of that, he changed the way I think about technology in my stories. Mind🤯!

SpecFicNZ’s Virtual Professional Development Workshops are a ‘first in first served’ benefit of belonging to what is an extremely supportive speculative fiction organisation that’s fuelled by volunteers and has the world’s smallest annual fee.

The next one is in July
